If you are about to embark on an extension or refurbishment of your heritage building then why not consider specifying traditional lime mortar.
Lime mortar is different from modern cement-based mortars. Modern mortars are not usually suitable for old brickwork since their high strength risks damaging soft old brick.
Lime mortar is gentler and can move and breathe, allowing old brickwork to naturally age and flex according to the seasons.
If you look carefully at many old walls which have been inadvertently re-pointed using cement mortar, you will usually find patches where the old brick is damaged, often crumbling within a rectangle of grey cement mortar.
Lime mortar is also available in an enormous range of completely natural colours and finishes which match the local history and character of your traditional buildings in your neighbourhood.
Remember the old adage – ‘the mortar should never be stronger than the brickwork’
